REPLAY! Blink 182 “What’s My Age Again?”
[REPLAY! is a weekly feature where we jump in the DeLorean to review an ancient “music video.” It’s like Throwback Thursday except it sounds a lot cooler and doesn’t have a #hashtag.]
Growing up as a suburban white kid–it still kind of feels weird typing that out–it baffles me that we haven’t talked about Blink 182 yet. When the music video for “What’s My Age Again?” came out, I was barely a teenager. I didn’t even have a fucking learner’s permit yet. That was over a decade ago. Yet somehow, the thought of running around naked–even though Mark, Tom and Travis didn’t actually do it for the video–still seems like a good idea.
You can hate on Blink all you want for their cheesy pop hooks, selling out, selling records, whatever. Yes, they found the formula, and yes, they milked the shit out of it. But that’s kind of the point of a formula in the first place. Figure it out, do it a bunch, marvel at your handiwork. But I digress. Blink 182 remains awesome to this day because they’re relatable. I didn’t wanna grow up. I still don’t wanna grow up. Most guys remember putting on cologne to take a pretty girl out. Bailing on something or other just to watch TV. Prank phone calls. Porn stars. Running around naked. Hitting the TV.
This shit was all about growing up. It made sense then, and it still makes sense now.
