REPLAY! GENESIS – “Land of Confusion”
[REPLAY! is a weekly feature where we jump in the DeLorean to review an ancient “music video.” It’s like Throwback Thursday except it sounds a lot cooler and doesn’t have a #hashtag.]
THIS WEEK: REPLAY! Genesis – Land of Confusion
Straight up, there are few things more terrifying than Phil Collins being muppet-ified, and I’m saying that as someone who grew up rolling around in his dad’s Mustang with the top down blaring the solo and group work of Collins at an inappropriate level.
Even as the video moves into the terrifying realm of Super Mario Bros the Movie it doesn’t get better. If I’m being completely honest, there’s no reason to watch the filled-nylon-sock-puppet-version of Phil Collins operate a corded telephone, microphone or hangout with Ronald Reagan versions of himself that have been rendered in a similar style.
And yet, the video remains. Whether you’re kissing monkeys, thinking about yourself in puppet forms or wishing yourself into pop-super-stardom, it’s a video that somehow remains memorable even with the stupid glasses and huge foreheads. Come out of retirement, Phil. We need you on the scene again.
