The Damned – 40th Anniversary of “Damned Damned Damned”

Let’s start this like a best man speech. The Damned. What can we say about The Damned that hasn’t been said before?

Probably everything because you don’t know shit. For those of you who were just born or have been living under a car, The Damned is one of THE earliest punk rock bands that came out of the UK scene.

The local success–maybe success isn’t the right word just yet, let’s go with sheer presence–of the Sex Pistols spawned a whole new movement of bands to explode out of this sound and lifestyle including bands like The Clash, The Jam, X-Ray Specs, Generation X and the Buzzcocks. Everyone knows the Sex Pistols. Everyone knows The Clash. Not too many people bring up the rest. Well fuck those people.

The Damned were born out of the UK punk scene after some local lads saw and heard bands like the Ramones, The Stooges, and The New York Dolls. These were the kids that grew up listening to The Who and The Rolling Stones who already had the counter-culture mindset and were down with the concept of anarchy. Noise, anger, violence and drugs were all fuel for the fire that manifested itself in punk. With the help and influence of people like Malcom McClaron–who briefly managed The New York Dolls and later returned back to jolly old England to bring UK punk to the forefront–punk was on it’s way to becoming a marketable genre to all those angsty kids who just wanted to be spit on by their idols and give you the bird.

Moving on. So out of this, The Damned. They managed to release a first UK punk single, “New Rose,” even before the Sex Pistols released “Anarchy in the UK,” which was huge because in the history books, they were the first UK punk band to put it on wax and release a single as well as the first UK punk band to land on and perform on US soil.

So the single they put out in Oct 1976. Historic, right? It doesn’t stop there. What’s even more historic, and coming back full swing, is that “New Rose” was recorded for their first full length album Damned Damned Damned which was released in… wait for it… 1977. February 18th of 1977 to be exact. So let’s do the math. It’s February of 2017. Subtract the 1. Carry the 7. Holy shit! IT’S THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RELEASE OF Damned Damned Damned!

To celebrate this milestone in the career of the lead singer David Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible and the most current lineup (which has been consistent since 2004), they’re re-releasing the album as a deluxe edition and going on tour.

If you like punk rock, go see The Damned. If you like metal, go see The Damned. If you like Kenny G, Incubus or Nickelback, go see The Damned. They are the founding fathers of the movement that influenced the shitty music you listen to. You might learn something. If you don’t, just think, you may never be given the chance to go see this band. And if you don’t like their live set, fuck you.
