Gary Numan – Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) & Tour
Gary Numan. Not a new name. Not a young, fresh cat with a new sound. He’s more like the OG of electronic music, most famously known for his late 70’s hits, “Cars” and “Are Friends Electric,” is still at it after all these years.
You may recognize his tune “Cars” because it was featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and covered by Fear Factory. His track “Down in the Park” has been covered by Dave Grohl and the rest of Foo Fighters. Ever heard of them? He’s even accompanied Nine Inch Nails on stage for covers “Cars” and “Metal.” Reznor has also cited him as being one of his biggest influences.
He’s gone through a number of identity changes in both his musical style and appearance. With every album he produced came a different persona–some of which worked in the early 80’s, and some of which flopped in the early 90’s. It wasn’t until he reinvented himself in the early 90’s with a harder and darker industrial sound, and stripped away all of his previous personas, that he really started exploring personal issues and this final persona. At a time when Industrial was taking off and becoming “something,” he was at the forefront of the movement.
This dude’s been around the block before. I’m talking serious track record. So, for the October 15th release of his new album, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), he’s making some tour stops on the East and West coast, and then he’s joining Nine Inch Nails to support them for a few nights in Florida. Florida, according to my girlfriend, “Is full of 80 year olds, Applebees, and Lincoln Towncars. I can name 49 better states than Florida.” [Ed. Note: Heart attacks will increase around Halloween then.]
